16U and Junior Nationals - Day 3 Recap

Heading into Day 2, Michigan has a plethora of guys still alive. In Junior freestyle, Michigan has 10 wrestlers in the Round of 32, plus another 20 guys alive in the consolation wrestlebacks. 16U fared even better in Day 1. The younger group put 13 into the Round of 32 and have 24 more still alive in the wrestlebacks.

One of the better Junior wins of Day 1 came from state champ Layne Martin. The Rockford Ram had a big win in the Round of 64, taking down Anthony Garza of Cali in a 17-16 barnburner. Although not ranked, Matscouts had Garza as a contender to place, which should put Martin in a solid spot to potentially reach the podium for the second consecutive year (last year was in 16U).

In one of the toughest early-round matches of the tournament, Blake Cosby dropped a 6-4 decision to top-10 nationally ranked Dallas Russell (GA). Cosby will now have to rattle off 7-8 consecutive wins to reach the podium for the second consecutive year.

Junior boys pick back up in the 9am EST session, while 16U will resume at 4pm EST. Both groups will wrestle through the quarterfinals tomorrow and will finish up on Wednesday.
