OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College wrestling team has climbed to No. 4 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll, which was released Jan. 28. The Comets entered the season unranked, moved into the poll for the first time at No. 13, dropped one spot to No. 14, surged to No. 7 before slipping to No. 9 and now being the No. 4 ranked team.
Three wrestlers are ranked in the individual poll. SeniorJustin Holm (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) is the highest ranked Comet at No. 3 at 141 pounds. Senior Gage Pederson (Hastings) is No. 6 at 149 pounds, while seniorJeff Holm (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) is No. 7 at 184 pounds.
In addition, Olivet is No. 6, according to the d3wrestle.com poll, which was also released Jan. 28. Five wrestlers are included in the Top 10 of the individual d3wrestle.com rankings. Pederson is the highest at No. 4, followed byJeff Holm at No. 5 and Justin Holm at No. 6. JuniorTrevor Timmreck (Birch Run) is ranked No. 8 at 285 pounds, and junior Nick Allen (Scotville/Mason County Central) is No. 10 at 174 pounds.
The Comets have a 14-5 dual match record and are coming off a 23-12 win against then No. 2 Concordia College-Moorhead (Minn.). Two of their losses came to No. 1 Wartburg (Iowa) College and No. 3 Messiah (Pa.) College.
Olivet is back on the mats Friday and Saturday at the Pete Willson Invitational, hosted by Wheaton (Ill.) College. Action starts Friday morning at 11 a.m. CST, and resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CST.
