The FILA Junior World Team Trials went down today in Madison, WI with the best 17-20 year olds in the country duking it out for a trip to Croatia this summer.
Three former Michigan prep standouts won their respective weight classes, and earned spots on the US Junior World Team will compete at the Junior World Championships later this summer.
University of Michigan freshman Adam Coon ran the table, winning the 120kg title in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman. Coon won four matches in the matter of about 90 minutes, winning both best-of-three championships series in consective matches.
Coon defeated long time nemesis Brooks Black of Univ. of Illinois in dominant fashion, with a tech-fall and a fall. Meanwhile, running back and forth between the Greco and Freestlye mat, Coon also rattled of a 5-0 win and a fall over Sam Stoll of Minnesota to win the Greco title.
Cornell freshman Lowell native Gabe Dean ran the gauntlet, winning three straight matches to win the 84kg challenge tournament before disposing of FILA Junior National Champ Ricky Robertson from Univ. of Wisconsin in straight stanzas with a 4-0 decision and a 12-1 tech-fall to earn a spot on the World Team.
Old Dominion freshman and DCC grad Kevin Beazley won the 96kg Greco-Roman title with ease, scoring a tech-fall and a fall over Roy Nash.
St. Johns junior Logan Massa, wrestling up a weight at 74kg (163lbs) due to the international weight difference, finished 2nd in the loaded challenge tournament with a tough loss to Univ. of Illinois freshman Isaiah Martinez in the finals. Massa knocked off NCAA Qualifier Markus Scheidel in the semis with two other wins over College freshmen Brian Harvey (Army) and Garrett Hammond (Penn State).
Another Red Wing, St. Johns senior Zac Hall, placed in the challenge tournament competing at 66kg (145lbs). Hall lost his opening match to Univ of Iowa freshman Brandon Sorensen before rattling off three straight wins including wins over 2x NCAA Qualifier Alex Richardson of Old Dominion and University National All-American Sahid Karbo. Hall finished 4th at 66kg.
University of Nebraska freshman Tim Lambert, who won a state title at Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern, finished 4th at 55kg with a big win over 2014 NCAA All-American Darian Cruz of Lehigh.
Fowlerville senior Dalton Roberts, competing in both styles at 50kg, finished 2nd in Greco-Roman and 4th in Freestyle. University of Michigan freshmen George Fisher finished 4th at 60kg.
